History
The Tokyo Institute of Technology is one of the oldest engineering universities in Japan, with its predecessor - Tokyo Vocational School - established in 1881, and has since produced numerous engineers. Meanwhile, it has also welcomed, as professors and lecturers, a number of leading figures from the humanities field, including cultural anthropologist Kawakita Jiro (1920-2009), Nagai Michio (1923-2000), educator who went on to become Minister of Education, and literary critic Eto Jun (1932-1999).
- 2001 the Tokyo Institute of Technology, along with three renowned universities; Hitotsubashi University, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies and Tokyo Medical and Dental University, formed the Four University Alliance.
- 2003 and 2004, the Framework for Systematization and Application of Large-scale Knowledge Resources and the Creation of Agent-Based Social Systems Sciences - two projects in which we were participant members - were chosen for these two consecutive years the Center of Excellence Program, a Japanese national research project.
- 2004 saw the commencement of the Tokyo Tech-Tsinghua Joint Graduate Program.
- 2006 10th anniversary of the department.
- 2008 Professor Imada Takatoshi of Sociology awarded the Medal of Honor with Purple Ribbon from the Japanese Government.
